A reminder to our dancing friends --

Saturday, July 5, Shepherdstown Music and Dance will host its regular, monthly dance. Come for the charm of dancing in this lovely, historic town, and come to welcome our caller JoAnn Koppany, here from San Diego. And we have that special something that July dancers welcome -- an air-conditioned dance hall!

Our band is Rocket Surgery, with Carl Friedman, Andrew Marcus and Ralph Barthine.

Note to our out-of-town dancers -- there is a concert and fireworks event at Antietam Battlefield the same evening as the dance. You may want to come early to Shepherdstown for dinner, or avoid Rt 65 and Rt 34 around Sharpsburg just before the dance.

The dance begins at 8; lesson at 7. We'll look forward to seeing you there!
Saturday, May 3 - Shepherdstown May Day Festival - Fun Starts 10:30am
Annual Shepherdstown May Day Celebration is one of the last Remaining Maypole Festivals in the Country

Be in the Parade - Dance - Picnic - Wrap the Maypole - Dress to Celebrate Spring

Search for the Golden Arrow, Enjoy Live Music, Morris Dancing, Poetry & Storytelling

All in the heart of Downtown Shepherdstown - and it's Free!

The Shepherdstown May Day celebration - a FREE COMMUNITY EVENT - began almost seventeen years ago, and today is one of the last two remaining Maypole festivals in the country. The event takes place in downtown, historic Shepherdstown WV on Saturday, May 3rd and begins with the search for the Golden Arrow. The search starts at On the Wings of Dreams gift shop, located at the top of the hill on German Street, at 10:30am. There children will find their first clue as to the whereabouts of the Golden Arrow. The clues, which are riddles, will lead the children from one shop to another until at last the Golden Arrow is found!

Then, at 11:30am, parade participants will begin to line up by the Episcopal Church on German Street. All are invited to participate in the parade. Participants may fill a wheelbarrow with spring flowers and wheel it; adorn themselves and their pets in pastels with ribbons, flowers, greenery and even wings; decorate a bike, stroller or wagon and ride in the parade; wave a branch of greenery with flowing ribbons attached; blow bubbles; flutter a homemade flag or banner celebrating spring or Mother Earth; carry a Maypole, giant puppet or earth globe; dance and twirl; dress up as the Green Man, a woodland elf or any character that reflects the joy of spring and the celebration of life and community; play a drum, blow a whistle, ggle or even ride a unicycle!

The parade will begin at noon and proceed down German Street to the center of town. There on the lawn of Shepherd University's McMurran Hall, the wrapping of the Maypole, a ceremony that harkens back to days gone by, will take place and the town will abound with maidens bejeweled in flowers and dressed in white, Morris dancers performing, musicians playing music, families picnicking and dancing, Shepherdstown's Green Man heralding in spring and the community at large celebrating life and all that's beautiful.

Live music by Don Oehser, The Corsettes, Todd Coyle and others will take place from 10:30am to 2:30pm on the steps of McMurran Hall. Town poets will gather beneath the Maypole to share original poetry, and stories of spring will be told.

From 3pm to 4pm, and then again from 5pm to 6pm, a Morris Stand will take place on King Street next to McMurran Hall. Morris dancing is a traditional English dance that dates back to medieval times. And, watching the Morris team dancing in their wooden-soled clogs and kits of purple and teal is one of the highlights of this annual event.
Jamming at the hotel following the concert

=== Details ===

Friday Night, March 28 Cliffside Inn Activities
All are welcome. A donation basket for our guest to contribute donations defray some of the costs of putting on the evening activities will be on the merchandise table in the hotel reception room. The hotel will set up a cash bar with some good microbrews and wines.
You are welcome to bring a potluck snack... cookies, pretzels, fruit, etc... like we do at our dances if you'd like...but you are not allowed to bring in beverages according to our hotel contract.

8PM Pub Sing with John Roberts
Although the hotel's pub isn't finished yet... we will hold our Pub Sing in the Poolside Reception Room. Bring your favorite English Pub songs, or sing along on the choruses to add to the flavor of the evening.
Other activities may include a gurning contest or other peculiarly English customs. Come with an open mind and a sense of humor!

9PM English Country Dance with Anna Rain calling and an Open Band with Peter Barnes, Mary Lea and Paul Oorts directing. Experienced musicians are welcome to join in the band and play with these great musicians!

Bring some dancing shoes... (not sneakers!), since our dance will take place at the hotel ballroom, which has one of those floors that are made up of pieces laid down on carpet. If our dance is large, it may spread off the "dance" floor, so shoes that don't stick to the carpet are more comfortable to dance in.
Anna Rain will call dances ranging from those that are easy enough for the inexperienced along with a few special choices for those who love this kind of dance. Jenny Coxon, from Yorkshire, will probably call a few of the dances that are popular at English ceilis... these are robust barn dances, so dress lightly, cause they'll warm you up!

10PM Jam Sessions
Karen Ashbrook and Jody Marshall will lead jam sessions with a variety of tunes in the Morgan and Berkeley Rooms at the Hotel. Some will have a distinctly English flavor.. and Jenny will probably help lead some of those! See the Upper Potomac Web pages for info www.home.earthlink.net/~updf/springfest, or www.dulcimerfest.org for some lists of popular tunes.

Saturday Night Showcase Concert at the Harpers Ferry Jr High:
Folksongs & Dance Melodies of Merry England
Saturday, March 29 at 8PM

This concert travels back across the water for it’s inspiration to songs and melodies that have been around for centuries, describing the life of the working man, celebrating the seasons and providing entertainment for an evening of dance for peasants and royalty alike. Opening with a set of songs by folksinger extraordinaire John Roberts, accompanying himself on banjo and concertina, we’ll hear timeless songs of the season, of the working man, of the sea and of the pub. Jenny Coxon has for many years been one of the leading players of the hammered dulcimer in England, playing a vast traditional and eclectic repertoire in folk bands, at morris dance gatherings and in dance bands for English ceilidhs. Peter Barnes and Mary Lea play flute and fiddle in the English dance band Bare Necessities, whose lush sound and intricate orchestrations of this beautiful repertoire has inspired dancers across the country and abroad for over 25 years. Joined by multi-instrumentali
st Paul Oorts on mandolin, guitar, accordion and more, this new Peter, Paul and Mary trio is sure to have you dancing in your seat and in the aisles.

Co-sponsored by Upper Potomac Spring Music Weekend and Shepherdstown Music & Dance. At Harpers Ferry Jr. High School. Tickets $15 adults, $ 12 seniors, $10 SMAD members, $8 children and students. Tickets are available at O'Hurley's General Store or at the door.
Info: www.smad.us , (304) 263-2531 or updf@earthlink.net.

This Saturday, May 5, we'll celebrate the May in style in Shepherdstown. We're inviting you to join us for the day, which begins in the streets of Shepherdstown at noon, and ends with a dance at the Men's Club at 8.</>

The May Day celebration in Shepherdstown is a big, fun community event. We invite lots of musicians and dancers out to help us celebrate spring in the traditional English fashion... with a processional (parade), maypole, dances and morris.... along with other folk customs appropriate to the day. You are invited to participate -- for details and contact information see http://smad.us/mayday/aboutthemay.shtml

The festivities continue into the evening with a Contra Dance at the Men's Club. The All-Star lineup includes Mary Lea, Dave Wiesler, Paul Oorts and Ralph Gordon. Robbin Schaffer is our caller.

It promises to be a fine May Day in Shepherdstown. Please join us!
